There is one nut holding the water drainage and one holding the box to the firewall. 3 bolts came out after I filed the end of the screw, held it in place with pliers and used a 11mm wrench to remove the nuts. The one in the top centre didn't want to come out until I used a grinder to cut it off.

Most FORD heater boxes are snap-clipped together, and if you remove the rear panel from the heater box, you will see the heater core...it looks like a smaller radiator...twist the heater hose off of the heater core (x2) from the engine side and gently remove the heater core from under.

In all honesty, there isn't many cars or trucks where you could pull the heater core without first pulling the dash. The Dakota is definitely not one of them. The number 4 screw on the cowl is holding a cable clip in place and the other end is the right bottom screw of the heater box - you need a second person with a 7/8 wrench to release it from the side under the car while you unscrew it from inside the car with a 3/8.
